Our Career Team was busy building student career readiness!

2000+ accessed virtual and in-person career drop-in services.
We helped Science students with over 1100 career advising appointments.
1550+ students increased their career readiness though workshops.

Cooperative Education

Co-op was busy growing, boosting student earnings and adding lots of new programming!

Co-op students earned a total of over $4 million this year.

Science students applied for over 5000 co-op roles on OSCARplus.

We partnered with 170 employers.
We engaged over 50 new co-op employers this year.
We posted over 1200 Science co-op positions.

Science co-op students completed 567 co-op work terms.
We held 130+ Science co-op events and 24 workshops, providing opportunities for students to connect with employers, fellow students and alumni.

 

New Initiatives

We held our first-ever Co-op Symposium. 150 co-op students shared their co-op experiences, advice and guidance with fellow students and the McMaster community.

Students told us they wanted more engagement so started our monthly newsletter “SciScoop” – highlighting co-op, career and experiential education content that is valuable to science students.

Our inaugural Graduate Career Programming was launched, hosting 10 different workshops and alumni panels. We began offering one-on-one graduate student career advising and drop-in sessions, preparing graduate students for a smooth transition to a career after graduate school.

We initiated a Individual Development Plan Pilot project, a Faculty of Science Graduate Student Career Development Needs Assessment.

We launched research initiatives to proactively be at the front of Equity Diversity and Inclusion in our career development programming.

Last but not least, we kicked off the Advancing Tomorrows Actuaries (ATA) pilot Program. Working with Co-operators General Insurance Company, Advancing Tomorrow’s actuaries closes any knowledge and skill gap for Actuarial and Financial Mathematics (AFM) students, streamlines their progress from education to first co-op work-term with Co-operators Insurance Company and ensures their success on their co-operative education work placements. A key to the success of the program was extensive training, ability to work on real-world scenario case studies specific to the insurance industry and the availability of industry mentors to provide advice and guidance.
