Student discovers a sense of community in Design Your Science Career
Design Your Science Career is designed to help students navigate their career and life journey alongside other science students.
For Roshan Balachandran, the highlight was the remarkable group of students who attended.
“Realizing that each participant, including myself, was navigating their own unique career challenges, brought a sense of reassurance and solidarity to the group. This openness fostered a vulnerable and welcoming atmosphere,” said Roshan, a student in the Molecular Biology and Genetics program.
Roshan learned the importance of maintaining a proactive and positive mindset. Instead of focusing on past regrets, it’s important to dedicate that time and energy to build your way forward to a life you enjoy.
“This was especially evident when I developed my own Odyssey Plan to start my own podcast. Developing this Odyssey Plan uncovered new ambitions.”
Roshan shared that the workshop exceeded his expectations. He really enjoyed the interactive activities that brought students together.
“I would recommend the DSYC workshop to any science student. It helps to redefine career goals that will compliment the life they are hoping to live.”
Many students believe that career exploration is a journey that they should embark on their own, but through the workshop coordinated by Dan Manns, students can discover the benefits of navigating this path with others.
Roshan’s advice to students taking the workshop? “Accept where you are and stay curious.”
